Your child will enjoy the V.Reader right from the start, with stories that come alive through interactive graphics, written words, and a narrator that reads the story out loud. Each book comes with its own games that encourage reading comprehension, phonics, word building, and many other skills. The toy has its own activities that keep your young one entertained, including a coloring book, photo album, and writing practice games.

A progress log helps you and your child track growth in all the activities and games. When the toy is connected to your computer, your child can receive certificates of achievement as he or she improves.

Expand Your Child's Collection with Download Options

As your child grows in ability, the V.Reader can grow too. A cartridge reader allows you to purchase copies of stories and games, and an included USB cable connects the device to your computer so you can download more exciting games and books. In order to store more books on your V.Reader, you will need to purchase a separate SD card .

Durable Reader Features Kid-Friendly Design

With a 3.5-inch colorful touch screen, easy-access buttons, and a full keyboard, the V.Reader offers full functionality. The touch screen works effectively with either a stylus or fingers. Our testers found that the letter buttons are small and take getting used to, but there are not many games that require them.

A cover closes over the front to keep the buttons and touch screen safe when the toy is not in use. Your child can also listen to stories through headphones, making it a great toy for the car or quiet time.

My five-year-old loved this toy! It has a surprisingly reactive touch-screen pad at the top, which both of my kids (5 & 7) liked. Although it's an e-reader, and you need to download content from the internet, there's quite a bit you can do with it without an internet connection:
- the writing app presents a word, shows how to draw the letters, and invites you to trace the letters. As it turns out, there's a little stylus included, but it took us a little while to find it - my daughter actually played with it for quite a while just using her fingers to trace the letters.
- there's a coloring application that lets you touch and fill in the colors. Not exactly a learning app, but it keeps the kids entertained.
I'm not a big believer in "learning toys", but after playing with it for 30 minutes, my 5-year-old wrote "apple" on a piece of paper - I was very impressed.

Setup for the online content was a bit of a hassle, though. First, the device doesn't... Read more

Ok,I really thought this was cute and would be perfect for my 4 year old daughter. She always played with it on display in the stores. We bought this item first from Costco because it was a bundle deal. We put brand new batteries in it and it would never power on. I tried over and over, removing and replacing..nothing. So, needless to say, I returned to Costco. They were sold out, so I went to toysrus. I purchased, put batteries in before leaving the store. It went on. Went home, played with it for about 10 minutes before feeling as if we had seen pretty much all it had to offer. I downloaded the free stuff that it came with, and had two other purchased games for it. It appeared to only have a few things to do per 'game' purchased and we discovered that it could get old, really fast! We turned it off. When we went to turn it back on, it wouldn't power on. The only way to get it back on was to remove the batteries and replace them again. I had to do this 3 times. Brand new batteries... Read more
